چکیده

Various exact tests for showing a di&erence between two treatments or the non-inferiority (therapeutic equivalence) based on the di&erence of two binomial proportions are compared. It is found that a frequently used test has to be applied with great caution due to its numerical instability. Furthermore, a test based on the score statistic can be recommended as a good compromise between a simple and powerful procedure. Finally, a likelihood ratio based exact test is introduced, which slightly outperforms all other tests from the literature with respect to power. The issue of sample size determination is brie;y addressed. All methods are illustrated with help of an example where two antihelmintic agents are compared. c © 2003 Elsevier B.V. An exact confidence set for two binomial proportions and exact unconditional confidence intervals for the difference and ratio of proportions

An exact joint confidence set is proposed for two binomial parameters estimated from independent samples. Its construction relies on inverting the minimum volume test, a two-dimensional analogue of Sterne’s test for a single probability. The algorithm involves computer-intensive exact computation based on binomial probabilities. The proposed confidence set has good coverage properties and it pe...

Conditional versus Unconditional Exact Tests for Comparing Two Binomials

There are two fundamentally different exact tests for comparing the equality of two binomial probabilities – Fisher’s exact test (Fisher, 1925), and Barnard’s exact test (Barnard, 1945). Fisher’s exact test (Fisher, 1925) is the more popular of the two. In fact, Fisher was bitterly critical of Barnard’s proposal for esoteric reasons that we will not go into here. Notwithstanding Fisher’s reserv...

Tests for the homogeneity of two binomial proportions in extremely unbalanced 2 x 2 contingency tables.

Asymptotic tests such as the Pearson chi-square test are unreliable for testing the homogeneity of two binomial probabilities in extremely unbalanced cases. Two exact tests (conditional and unconditional) are available as alternatives and can be implemented easily in StatXact 6.0. In equal sample cases it is well known that the unconditional exact test is more powerful than the conditional exac...

Dealing with discreteness: making 'exact' confidence intervals for proportions, differences of proportions, and odds ratios more exact.

'Exact' methods for categorical data are exact in terms of using probability distributions that do not depend on unknown parameters. However, they are conservative inferentially. The actual error probabilities for tests and confidence intervals are bounded above by the nominal level. This article examines the conservatism for interval estimation and describes ways of reducing it. We illustrate ...

Exact probabilities and confidence limits for binomial samples: applied to the difference between two proportions.

An exact probabilities method is proposed for computing the confidence limits of medical binomial parameters obtained based on the 2x2 contingency table. The developed algorithm was described and assessed for the difference between two binomial proportions (a bidimensional parameter). The behavior of the proposed method was analyzed and compared to four previously defined methods: Wald and Wils...
